[PL 211] Women's War Daily: Military Brohesion

The main reasons against allowing women to serve in combat units include:

  • Women are not physically suited for combat roles.
  • Women in combat units will adversely affect unit cohesion.
  • The presence of women can be embarrassing and humiliating for men.
  • The presence of women in a masculine environment can lead to sexual harassment.
What do you think? Are these good reasons to ban women from combat units?

  1. I am a Danish army officer. I had women serve in my combat units in Iraq and Afghanistan. My thoughts on women in combat:

Women are not physically suited for combat roles: The average woman might not be, neither is the average man. On the front line we are not looking for the average person. We are looking people to get the job done.

Women in combat units will adversely affect unit cohesion: Articles after the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 suggested it. A formal study has nevet been carried out and the experiences of US's NATO allies with women serving in combat units apparently does not count.

The presence of women can be embarrassing and humiliating for men: How?

The presence of women in a masculine environment can lead to sexual harassment: No the presence of sexual harassers will lead to sexual harassment. Its a matter of respect for one another. Ultimately the leader's responsibility.

In the spring last year I did a post on leading women in combat. Its found here: http://sorensjogren.com/2012/the-problem-with-women-in-combat-units/
