[PHI 2200] The Uncle Ben argument for charity

Peter Singer argues that the affluent are morally obligated to donate to famine relief. Here is a different argument for a somewhat similar conclusion:
  1. The affluent have the power to improve the lives of the poor.
  2. With great power comes great responsibility.
  3. (Therefore) The affluent have a responsibility to improve the lives of the poor.

What do you make of this argument? Is it valid?
